Damping Properties of Casting Ti alloys and fabrication of Ti alloy Powders by using Mechanical Alloying Method

Abstract
Microstructure and phase transformation of mechanically alloyed Ti-Ni(CU) powders for enhancing the damping properties were studied. The mixtures of elemental powders (Ti-50Ni, Ti-45Ni-5Cu) were mechanically alloyed by high energy ball mill. Mechanically alloyed Ti-Ni(Cu) powder was heat treated at the temperature up to 850¢¥C for 1 hour in the 10-6 torn vacuum atmosphere for the crystallization and phase transformation to martensite. Specific damping capacity (SDS) using cantilever beam method was obtained by using a dynamic strain amplifier.

The results obtained were as follows;

1. TiNi(Cu) shape memory alloy powders were fabricated by mechanical alloying. So, the mixtures of elemental powders( Ti-50Ni and Ti-45Ni-5Cu) were mechanically alloyed(MA). MA was to engaged for 10 hours were formed amorphous phase and particles refinement.

2. Amorphous phase was crystallized to martensite(B19¢¥ )and.austenite(B2) after heat treating for 1 hour at the temperature at 8501C, and TiN13 intermetallic compound was partially formed.

3. Specific damping capacity of Ti, Ti-50NIi and Ti-45Ni-5Cu casting alloys was related with the amount of martensite phase and the best result of damping capacity was Ti-45Ni-5Cu casting material.
